Kelly received her MFA in Creative Writing from The New School and holds a BA in Journalism and Mass Communications from Kansas State University. She sits on the Board of Directors for Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund, a nonprofit created in memory of her father, US Army COL John McHugh, who was killed in Afghanistan on May 18, 2010.
